🇪🇺 Important change – EU Permanent Residence Permit (permesso di soggiorno UE Durata Illimitata), from 2021, the validity period of the card is 10 years!
At the beginning of 2021, there was a change in immigration law that amended the validity period of the EU Permanent Residence Permit (Illimitata).
The new EU Permanent Residence Permit 🇪🇺 of this type will now be issued for a period of 10 years. The words “Durata Illimitata” will no longer be written on it. Of course, this does not mean that this permit is no longer indefinite. Legally, ALL ITS PREVIOUS CHARACTERISTICS WILL BE PRESERVED!
It will still be indefinite!
The card itself, which is issued to you, will be valid for only 10 years.
Is it necessary to urgently change the current (previous version) of this permit – the answer is NO!
The EU Permanent Residence Permit (Durata Illimitata) has always had a data update period: photo, etc. (aggiornamento), and this period will be your starting point for replacing your EU Permanent Residence Permit.

How to calculate the days spent in Italy that will be counted when applying for the EU Permanent Residence Permit Illimitata. 🇮🇹
The Immigration Law (T.U.I.) Article 9 paragraph 5 states that for the purposes of calculating the five-year period of residence in Italy, the following periods cannot be taken into account:
⛔️ periods of short-term stays provided for by the immigration law and executive regulations.
⛔️ stays in Italy as a holder of a certain legal status provided for by the Vienna Convention: status of a diplomat, consul, and other representative of another state in Italy.
👌 The periods listed below, however, can be taken into account for the purposes of calculation and therefore included in the 5-year period of your regular stay in Italy, namely:
✅ periods of stay for study or vocational training,
✅ periods of stay under temporary protection,
✅ periods of stay for medical treatment,
✅ periods of stay in Italy for social protection,
✅ periods of stay for the protection of victims of domestic violence,
✅ as well as the period of your stay in Italy for the reason of “asylum” or “political asylum”.
I also want to note that the periods listed above can be counted when calculating the days of your stay in Italy.
They may not be present in your case. If you permanently reside in Italy and meet all the criteria listed above, you have nothing to worry about. Confidently submit your documents after 5 years.
And remember: in the office of the immigration police, the days of your presence will be counted very carefully.
Good luck and good mood to everyone!
Yours, Villina Helpwesthouse
